Updated every few months, these 1,000 quilt block patterns will all link directly back to their creator and source of the design! I have been collecting these for a year now and they come from a variety of sources. I am just linking you...to them! Enjoy!!!

If any links appear broken, it means you must sign in for free (McCalls etc) before you can view them. The others link directly. Enjoy!

MYSTERY SCRAPPY SAMPLER II - an Internet Block of the Month Even a good mystery is better with a theme: Did she do it with Batiks? Did 1930’s or Brights lead her down the path of intrigue? Was the butler responsible for the shockingly beautiful reds and blacks? Join us for six months of secretive sewing, deciphering subtly placed clues (oh, okay the clues are easy…) Print out clue sheets, once a month, month, September through February, you’ll crack the case and come up with a lap quilt that reveals that someone was guzilty of making six different blocks from an awesome set of scraps!

This block shows both love and support by having the ribbon placed inside the heart. Sewing, Quilting, Needleworking or Crafting!

It's February 2013, and I've come out from my woman cave where I have been busy sewing and quilting in honor of February, Valentines Day, and shared with love: my updated collection of hearts quilt block patterns, quilt patterns, coaster patterns, heart shaped sewing projects directions, and even some heart themed Valentine card and paper craft projects for 2013.

Make a pledge to yourself, and to those you love this month. Take good care of your own heart with healthy habits and a good and active life and make a comfort quilt, a heart shaped comfort pillow, or some other lovely little heart filled gift of comfort to another..one for you, one for a beloved, and one for someone you may never meet but can reach out to with love, none the less!

Whenever we make a comfort quilt or donate a block to a given cause, we are putting a piece of ourselves...our heart...into that donation. Whether they are given to a loved one, heart patients, for cancer care, for hospice donations, or to simply to show our love, faith, and caring...it's wonderful to make and keep heart blocks, quilts and other projects on hand....any time of the year!

My own heart shaped or themed tutorials:

My String Pieced Prayer Pocket Pillowmake with strings or solids and use the little pocket in the back...for sending good wishes of any kind

    !

Making a (Cardiac) Heart Pillowperfect for post surgery for either cardiac or breast cancer patients, hugging a pillow over the heart after cardiac surgery or under the arm after breast surgery have been shown to help significantly with post-operative pain.

    Love Bugs

There is something extra special about receiving a handmade Valentine. These Valentine ladybugs are a cute way to let someone know how much you care. It's a fun and easy project that even the kids can help out with. You can make one or a whole class set of these adorable love bugs. It's okay to be creative with the colors. This is a great way to use up some of the bits of scrapbooking paper you may already have. Materials
    • 1 piece of white cardstock to print the heart template
    • 1 piece of colored cardstock
    • 1 piece of coordinating patterned paper
    • 2 small brads - I used heart shaped ones, but plain brass ones work fine
    • pencil
    • scissors
    • black pen or marker
    • 1/8 inch hole punch
    • 2 small googly eyes and glue (optional)
Directions can be found here:  Love Bug Valentine'ssewing kit ensemble!

The wonderful " Disappearing Nine Patch"seems to a technique in continual process of new and more involved variations. And I'm happy to share all of my links and easy cutting diagrams with you! It's so easy to take a simple block and turn it into a much more complicated looking one...and a quilt that's quick and easy to create!  Shown above...a wonderful 'Whacky Nine Patch" another variation that I do so love!  Thanks to Alicia for this one!

Simply put, a nine patch block is created and then sliced apart in a myriad of different cuts or with different color arrangements so it literally disappears and is replaced by four smaller units.

Apparently, Karin Hallaby, wrote a book in 2002 called "Magic Pillows, Hidden Quilts, which included a Magic Nine Patch quilt made using the same technique that's so popular today. Nancy Brenan Daniel also wrote a book called Disappearing Nine Patch in 2002 but apparently it is quite different from what we are calling that style today.

Eventually, an online blog by Helen Bailey, featured a tutorial about her own use of the disappearing nine patch but she referred to it by a different name. The same technique has been called Tossed Nine Patch (by Eleanor Burns) and (possibly) 9 to 4 by other quilters and authors.

And now of course, we have disappearing 4 patches, 9 patches, and on and on with so many fun and varied improvisations.  But just to have a look, check out some of  the images and links that I have discovered and create new and easy blocks and quilts of your own!

Let's start with some fun and simple 4 Packs as I share links to some tutorials and some different variations from what you might hink of as a D4P..or Disapearing 4 Patch, as well!

Click on the link for my primary blog  "With Heart and Hands"  post so I don't have to cut and paste and alter links twice!  Click Link below..and see all of the cutting diagrams and variations...oh, I do so love these easy and fast quilts!  You can make them in a day..start to finish if they're for a child or a lap quilt or even a wonderful wall hanging!

String Quilting: Free Links and Tutorials

    $

    0
In the same week, one of my online message board groups has been discussing 'strings' and 'string quilting', my own blog readers have mailed me letters asking me how I make my patriotic string quilts that I feature on several of my blogs, and I have actually been working during an online quilting bee on making additional strings for another project for donations. The three different readers who  wrote me at my blog email addy wanted help in getting string quilting blocks to surround a pre-made quilt panel such as the ones I use for patriotic quilt donation.

So, I decided it's time to post about this fun style of quilting once again!  For those of you who have never seen Gwen Marston's "Liberated String Quilting" book..this is a lovely example of how easy and fun it easy to make string quilts.
Example abound every where you look, once you begin to recognize them! I used this example when I posted about making    Ojo de Dios "The Eye of God": In Craft or Quilt
This one, below, is one that Julie Silber found and posted on facebook.  Notice how it can look so wonderfully liberated and yet it is a much older quilt with many of the characteristics in appearing as a traditional quilts and quilting
Or arranged to create designs...I love hearts, of course! So, I've made lots of these. Unfortunately, many before I was taking photos for a future blog, but here are some of my heart string quilts:

And then, the ones that I was asked about this week.  String quilts that are created when the strings are arranged pre-purchased panels...I love the military ones and make them for donation to wounded warriors or those in service to our country. I was so happy to make and donate these to a wounded warriors program.  Some of them, I have made in the same style multiple times..I love them that much!

Then, of course, there are bed quilts. A string quilt is an easy way to make a large quilt ...easily and quickly!  Here is one that I made queen sized, but it ended up king sized..so it goes down to my bed ruffles. I covered it up with a more decorative quilt to match my bedroom, but this inner quilt ..as one of FIVE..that I sleep under...is sooo warm...I just love sleeping under it at night!
And leftover bits and pieces of strips and strings can be used in super simple baby quilts. You don't need a foundation fabric if they're not sewn on the diagonal..but still you are using leftover strips and strings!  These are baby quilts I made in a day!
And then, of course..there's the Bento.  Still made from remnant strips and strings...irregularly pieced and cut and resewn togehter.   I didn't own a pattern or have any real idea of how to make this one..so I winged it as I went along.  My version is named  "Bento'ed Out of My Box" with a tutorial..as I made this one... for making the wonky squares here:
And my rainbow brights?  Oh, I still love this quilt I made a few years ago! I held onto this one for myself !

Still using string quilting, only with some some scrappy "a mile a minute" style blocks........
the original name for 'making fabric' that so many are using now. You just take scraps and sew them as fast as you can...a mile a minute...until you have blocks the size you want! I've made a lot of these, and I love making them.I've even made string quilts for donation to children in foster care or other group care or homes like this one, below:

But you don't have to start out with a super sized quilt, or a wall quilt or even a baby or child one.
It can be as easy as .....
Making a simple set of potholders:
    or making pillows.....
And can even make a somewhat wonky but wonderfully liberated cancer support ribbon quilt! A wall hanging? A small lap quilt for chemo care? Or just to show your love and support!

So, for all of you who wrote this week from one of my static blogs "Patriotic Heart Strings" where I post links to patriotic quilts and quilting...here's the 'skinny' of simple string quilting..with or without center panels to make them in a hurry for donation to your favorite charity or cause or person!
     Making a string quilt block:
String quilting, whether done straight across, or on the diagonal, is simply the sewing down of a variety of strings, or strips of alternating fabrics of many colors into blocks. Diagonal strings have a tendency to stretch on the bias, so underlying foundation blocks are more essential for them, but not required in simple straight piecing. And as for the 'skinny' on string quilting... strings for these quilts are usually somewhere in the 1" to 2  1/2" range unless you're working in miniature or super sizing something! Smaller than 3/4" is too small..it's easier to start big and sew a wide seam to miniature them for things like small format art quilts etc. And bigger than 3" like in my pillows, doesn't really look like strings much, anymore! So to cut and sew simple strings for string quilting..and it is ALWAYS better to use up your scraps, first..before decimating brand new pieces of fabric just to 'make' fabric..which in the old fashioned days was always called patchwork, anyway! So, to string these along you.... Start by simply cutting foundation blocks out of ANY scrap fabric..it doesn't have to be white! and then adding..from the center out to each diagonal end....strips and pieces of varying sizes, piece by piece until the block is 'all filled up.' To create a pattern in this final quilt top, I am using blue for the first center strip. But any repetitive color can be used as an anchoring strip. And if you wish, you can be totally random, as well..with no center 'anchoring' color!
    1. To begin this block, to make its final quilt, I used a 10" foundation pieces and a variety of cut strips of many colors. Others prefer blocks as small as 6" or as large as 12 1/2"...the choice is yours. Larger blocks multiply spatially a lot quicker! Lay down a center strip of any color, diagonally across the foundation piece. (I iron a fold into the center of both the foundation block and this first string piece for matching the two pieces.
     2. Sew down the second strip, right sides together.
      3. Press each seam open after sewing.
     4. Sew down each succeeding strip, one by one, ironing after each new seam.
     5. When strips fill the foundation block, iron flat, then align and trim to size desired.

     6. Lay out completed blocks on your design wall or floor ;) and select arrangement and desired size of quilt top.
To add around a center panel or block, you need to either pre-plan your block sizes, or wiggle and jiggle and trim, as I did!  (See tips section near bottom of post.)
7.Finally, you would attach block seams in rows as desired, using additional strips to fill in size differentials around center panels or other additional blocks, sashings or cornerstones, if you so desire!

    Tips and Ideas:
The idea for turning a series of blocks into a quilt is as easy as simply placing your finished string quilted blocks into a pattern or arrangement..with, or without a center panel such as shown in this one.   I remember it took a bit of recalculating to get my string blocks to fit around the center panel as I had miscalculated my sizing. But I think, I used a 13" piece of fabric as my foundation blocks for under the strings I sewed onto them and then cut them down into either 12" or 12 1/2" blocks.  Keeping in mind that the 1/4" seams on each side of the block takes away from making them fit that center panel. The use of a plain foundation fabric keeps the diagonal strings from stretching out. Some people use paper..like old phone book pages, then remove them after stitching, but I prefer using an inexpensive piece of cotton fabric or sheeting for my blocks. It creates another layer of quilting and doesn't require as much batting then. And in summer climates, the foundation pieced blocks is all you would even need for thickness..no extra batting required. These are referred to as 'summer quilts'..lighter and thinner. So, basically, foundation piece strings onto blocks, arrange them around your purchased center panels, add batting and quilt or tie with crochet cotton at different intervals. Mine is machine quilted in a simple meandering pattern ..the famous little puzzle piece shaped machine quilting. All of my military panels were purchased years ago...from Walmart...and I make and donate a lot of them, so I bought quite a few at the time. But I think they still sell them there. Mine came in groups of six and  in different branches of the military, some in all army, some just generally patriotic. I'm not sure if Joann's or similar carry them anymore. A really large quilt shop might, but smaller ones tend to keep newer fabrics in stock and then move them out as fast as they can.
It does make a unique quilt and each one looks so different depending on how you cut up your finished blocks!

**Yellow Clover  ( vintage directions, below ) a block design first published by Nancy Cabot for the Chicago Tribune. According to Barbara Brackman's Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns, Yellow Clover is one of hundreds of Cabot patterns sold by mail order during the 1930s. It is no longer available online, and the hyperlinks for photos have all been pulled off the website. But here are the directions that I still have:

And remember making an 'Easter' quilt can be as simple as making some four patches.... and added some bits and pieces ...just from some scraps you might already have....in bunny, chick, or any pretty Easter fabric! I used some scraps in Beatrix Potter prints, as shown above, and made this cute but easy, baby quilt and included a little soft fabric book for a quick gift! This little baby quilt is in flannel, and these where all the scraps I had in these colors..so no outside borders, and very simple style..but it is soft and special and still so cute! A Gaggle of Flying Geese: Links and Tutorials

Flying geese have been dated by Barbara Brackman’s Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns  as having been first published back to 1894, when the Ohio Farmer featured them on their “woman’s pages.”

Now, 120 years later—these simple little units are used in all kinds of quilts, from traditional to modern to improvisational and the most liberated of wonky quilting! (check out my own wonky liberated flying geese at the very bottom of this post!

Here are some fun suggestions and links for making flying geese and using them in your own quilting.  The tips and ideas are free and all images are either linked to the book they came from at Martingale, or free usage ones from google and facebook, or belong to me and my own projects.

And shown above: Some of my own projects from my 3D Baby Quilt  where 3D flying geese become "interactive" pinwheels, to my free pieced art quilts, to three tote bags and more!

If you're looking for great flying geese ideas..there are so many styles to choose from..and ways to create them.  Here are a few fun and creative ways with tips and techniques along the way!

Rhubarb Crisp Runner from Skinny Quilts and Table Runners II

    1. Traditional Technique: for quilters who like to use it up and make it do.

    2. Flip, Flip, Finish: for quilters who enjoy a good ol’ chain-piecing veg-out.

    3. Fast and Furious: for quilters who like to finish fast—times four.

    4. Paper-Pieced Geese: for quilters who wish to piece with the utmost precision.
The charts below each of the first three techniques give finished-unit sizes along with dimensions for the cut pieces. We’ve also provided a paper-pieced flying-geese pattern to download and print for practice.

Fly down to the bottom of this post to see how other quilters use flying-geese patchwork in their quilts. And then let your own flying-geese quilts take wing!

    Traditional Technique: Classic Flying Geese
From Cyndi Walker, author of Pretty Patchwork Quilts
Note: instructions will yield 2″ x 4″ flying-geese units (finished).

To make one flying-geese unit: Cut a 2 7/8″ square of fabric in half diagonally to yield two small triangles. Cut a 5 1/4″ square of a contrasting fabric in half diagonally to yield two large triangles, reserving one for another use. Sew one small triangle to one diagonal edge of the large triangle; press toward the small triangle. Sew the second small triangle to the other diagonal edge of the large triangle to make a flying-geese unit; press toward the small triangle.

Cyndi used her traditionally pieced flying-geese patchwork to make the blue flower points in her quilt “Moonflower.”

Flip, Flip, Finish: Flippy Corners Flying Geese
From Cathy Wierzbicki, author of Twosey-Foursey Quilts
Note: instructions will yield 2″ x 4″ flying-geese units (finished).

A “flippy corner” is a casual way to sew half-square triangles onto squares or rectangles without actually handling a triangle shape—cheater triangles, so to speak. This technique can be applied to a number of commonly used units and blocks. A good example is the flying-geese unit.
Traditionally, a flying-geese unit calls for one quarter-square triangle and two half-square triangles. If you prefer, however, you can make flying-geese units using the flippy-corner technique, as I did for the quilt pattern “Splash Dance.”
To make finished-size 2″ x 4″ units, substitute a 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangle for the quarter-square triangle and two 2 1/2″ squares for the two half-square triangles. Make the unit as shown in the following steps.
    1. Draw a diagonal line on the back of each 2 1/2″ square.
How to sew flying geese--flippy corners 1
    2. With right sides together, align one marked square with one edge of the 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangle as shown. Stitch one thread width to the outside of the diagonal line.
How to sew flying geese--flippy corners 2
    3. Cut 1/4″ beyond the stitching line as shown. Press the resulting triangle open and the seam allowance toward the triangle.
How to sew flying geese--flippy corners 3
    4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 on the other edge of the rectangle to complete the unit.
How to sew flying geese--flippy corners 4
Here’s the fun “Splash Dance” quilt Cathy made with her patchwork flying geese—she used flying-geese units as frog’s legs!

Fast and Furious: Four-at-a-Time Flying Geese
From Carrie Nelson, author of Another Bite of Schnibbles
    Note: instructions will yield 2″ x 3 1/2″ flying-geese units (finished).

Here are the steps for my favorite, no-special-ruler-required method of making flying-geese units. For each set of four matching flying-geese units, you’ll need one large square and four matching small squares. The large square will become the large triangle in each unit and the four small squares will become the small side triangles in each unit.
Let’s use a 4 1/4″ large square and four 2 3/8″ small squares to try this technique.
    1. On the wrong side of each of the four small squares, draw a diagonal line from corner to corner using a permanent pen, pencil, or chalk marker.
Patchwork flying geese--four at a time method 1
    2. With right sides together, place two marked squares on opposite corners of the large square. The points of the small squares will overlap just a little bit and the drawn line should extend across the large square from corner to corner as shown.
Patchwork flying geese--four at a time method 2
    3. Stitch a scant 1/4″ seam allowance on both sides of the drawn lines. Cut the squares apart on the drawn lines. Press the seam allowances toward the small triangles.
Patchwork flying geese--four at a time method 3
    4. With right sides together, place one of the remaining marked squares on the corner of each piece. The drawn line should extend from the point of the corner to the point between the two small triangles. Stitch a scant 1/4″ seam allowance on both sides of the drawn line. Cut the pieces apart on the drawn line. Press the seam allowances toward the small triangles. You’ll have four flying-geese units. The units will measure 2″ x 3 1/2″.

Paper-Pieced Geese: The Ultimate in Accuracy
From Karen Costello Soltys, author of Bits and Pieces

As Karen says:  "I’ve always been drawn to patchwork designs that form a diagonal pattern such as Flying Geese, but piecing many little triangles and setting triangles can be tedious with traditional cutting and sewing methods. I turned to foundation piecing to make my “Christmas Goose” quilt quite manageable. You can’t beat foundation piecing for accuracy—getting all those little triangles to be perfectly pointy and match up with those in the next block is a breeze."

Download and print these paper-pieced flying-geese patterns to practice your skills. The pdf includes patterns for making 1 flying-geese unit, as well as rows of 2, 3, and 4 units. For instructions on how to paper piece, you can visit our How to Quilt page and download the "Paper-Foundation Piecing: How to Make Paper-Pieced Quilt Patterns" pdf.

Karen used her flying-geese units to make a small Christmas quilt—the perfect size for a table topper or wall quilt:

Pinwheels, Whirlygigs, and Lots of Whirlygiggles

Whirlygiggles have been turning their scrappy little cartwheels across my sewing studio floor, tables, and sewing machine for a very long time. So, I thought I'd share one of my many tutorials to get us going for 2014. We can all do scrappy whirling, giggling, and lots and lots of cartwheels!

Also known as Scrappy Cartwheels, the template based quilt block is an oldie but goodie, with a new twist and a slightly different turn.

The carefree term 'whirlygiggles' has actually been around since 2002, but it was used by computer geeks, video game players, and home brew makers for various techniques or concepts as a modern twist on whirlygigs. Used as a twist of the tongue malapropism, it makes for a cute name for an old favorite...a variation of the pinwheel or windmill block, known as the scrappy cartwheel.

In the quilting world, the basic quilting designs for pinwheels, cartwheels, whirlygigs, and their name variation, whirlygiggles, have been around for a long time, as have templates and the much newer strip cutting techniques.

And of course, 'everything old is new again'. So, when whirlygigs and whirlygiggles(aka scrappy cartwheels) made a resurgence in popularity...and just re-purposed into its newer, more liberated version.

Patterns and templates have long been created and used for many versions of pinwheels of all kinds. Our our own mothers and grandmothers had already made quilts from the pattern using cereal box cardboard and pencil drawings for those very same blocks and turned them into beautiful and varied quilts.

Still, the free-wheeling spirit of all of the pinwheel and cartwheel shapes brought in a resurgence of its popularity. And, while credit may have been given many times (for the both the name and the pattern design) just like all of our memes or transmissions of information that mutate as they spread, the cute little whirlygig changed derivation, creation, and accreditation, as it whirled, gigged, and no doubt giggled, through time.

Similar to a basic pinwheel block, but with slanted, unequal fans or blades, it requires either template or pieced cuts, and not just strip cutting and piecing. It's a bit more work, but creates such a fun look that it's almost worth the extra work ;)

My whirlygiggles were made with the traditional template most of you have used, rather than the paper piecing that some have put out this year as an alternate variation to scrappy cartwheels. Using simple cutting and piecing, with a similar, but still different look.

Directions/Photo Tutorial: How to make a pinwheel, scrappy cartwheel, whirlygig, or whirlygiggle quilt:

    Step 1. Design
Make a pattern/templates from cardboard or plastic. I made 3" individual sections, 4 of them go into one finished 5" block.

There are four sections to a block. Each section consists of a blade and a background. I used dots versus plain wedges to show the use of contrasting fabric sections. Each section is drawn by making a dissecting line across the mid-line. (see photo above) On one side the dissecting point is 1/4" above the mid-line. On the other side, the dissecting point is 1/4" below the mid-line.

    Each segment requires 2 light wedges, and 2 dark wedges. A total of 4 each per block. My 36" quilt required 6 blocks x 6 blocks or 36 blocks. 4 x 36 = 144 lights, 144 darks.
A 42" quilt would require 7 blocks across x 7 blocks down. Repeat the math.

    Step 2: Cutting
Rotary or scissor cut 3" strips of both focus (print) and background (dots) fabrics. (Be sure to check quilting assistants for missing pieces.)

Now using your print or focus fabric cut wedges by hand with scissors, from layered strips. I cut 4 at a time, moving wedges down the strip as you cut.

For my quilt I needed a total of 144 light dots, and 144 dark print wedges. Continue to cut all of each set of wedges.

Step 3: Sewing of first segments
Begin sewing one light wedge to one dark wedge on one side as shown. I chain sewed the sets and then snipped the sections apart from the chain and pressed them each open.

Step 4: Sewing of block formation
Once all of the individual wedge sections are finished you then sew sets of two to another set of two as shown. This creates the windmill affect.

Step 5: Trimming and design placement of blocks
Each finished block should be trimmed down evenly. Mine became a 5" block, which were then placed into block formation in preparation for sashing strips around all sides of the block.

Step 6: Add sashings and borders
Sashings are cut and sewed on as for any quilt. Mine are 2 1/2" strips placed both vertically and horizontally to further enhance the spinning effect. I added 3" borders to the sides and later used, a deeper binding seam for stability with the flannel sashing.

Again, check your multiplying quilt assistants for any missing sections! My assistant works as a"liberated front freedom fighter".....rather than members of the quilt police.... and not only make quilting more interesting, but keep me working on the forefront of task at hand and not on perfection. That translates to a lot of trouble and extra work with any of my quilt loving cats ;)

    Step 7: Quilting
I choose to use black crochet cotton and tied my quilt. I wanted that old fashioned soft look and because I loved the look of black on the black and white with brown and gold, I did get what has been called 'little flies' on the back. Mine are tied in the center of each whirlygig. I loved the quirkiness of little black flies with all of my 2 x 2 animals in the whirlygigs.

(I named my quilt 'Shoo Flies, Don't Bother Me' and laughed the whole time I was tying them ;)

Step 8: BindingMy binding is sewn front over to back, with a naturally mitering corner that is extra deep. A look that I love in old quilts made without rules. Using my 3" binding strips gave me the soft rounded corners I wanted in contrast to the geometric look of the whirlygigs.

To keep the corners rounded without caving in, I simply inserted a small 1" square of batting into each corner to maintain each corner's shape. Add your own homemade label...mine are photo paper transfers I made myself...and you're done! My finished quilt is 47" x 47"of fun.

'Shoo Flies, Don't Bother Me'...a fun, quirky, free-wheeling quilt made entirely from scraps.... cartwheeling and whirlygiggling with great action and soft rounded corners, bringing delight to my quilting assistants and myself...all across my studio floor.

And the shoe flies? Those are the little black crochet thread quilting knots...which I just love! ...adding so much visual and tactile interest!

    Angel Wraps and Preemie Patterns

It's February and my heart is filled with thoughts of love. Thoughts of loving and caring and well, sharing...so, here is my ongoing list of precious little angel wraps, or preemie patterns that you can make in a just a few minutes at time! Make them and donate them to your local hospital, to special programs listed at the end or for someone you might know who just now, needs something this timy for their wee one.

    Angel Wraps:

When a tiny baby is born before its time, and is too fragile to survive, usually during the second or early third trimester, there is still birth of the baby.. A loss of this kind is huge for the grieving parents to face, yet most of them still want to both see, and to hold, their tiny little infants. It is a very special part of that grieving process, of letting go of the dreams of what might have been..to hold and to bond with their tiny little one.

What can be even harder is discovering that you have nothing to wrap or dress your tiny loved one in, as nothing will fit ,or is appropriate for the simplest of touches that are possible when holding, and saying goodbye. And so to have your little one passed to you in a rough, or not very attractive, piece of cloth only makes that awareness that much sharper and more painful.

Babies are wrapped up in simple tiny blanket like piece of cloth that most hospital provide. But if the hospital has them, a tiny little quilt or blanket.... made for this purpose by volunteers... can be wrapped around their little one for that holding, bonding, and saying goodbye, time.

I  made all twelve of these tiny little angel wraps and preemie blankets for this very purpose. And it was a deeply moving process for me as I made each and every one of them.
Mine are quite simple. They range from as tiny as a 9" square to as large as a 14" one. But each is special and made with love.

Many websites offer a variety of ideas for extra tiny pouches, wraps, blankets, or simple quilts or garments for what is medically termed as 'fetal demise.' And while these words seem harsh to those who have never heard them before, they are simply what the end of life resulting in a still birth is often called.

The idea of a specially made little quiltlet created and made with love and compassion seemed like a wonderful gift to give to our local hospital, so I had decided to spend a few days creating some in varying sizes and making a list of other ideas.

I found an assortment of links, files, and free downloadable patterns for a variety of blankets, quilts, pouches and wraps. But making a simple wrap can be as easy as making a simple 9"-12" blanket or quilt that can be tied to create a little pouch like shape for the tiniest of the tiny ones. Some can be tucked under at the bottom for the very tiniest and others can simply have a little half triangle pouch sewed into one corner or be left open to cradle the littlest of babies.

I simply cut two or there squares of fabric sized from 9" to 11". A third square can be folded in half and place as a triangle shape in one corner and sewn in a the same time, or it can be left open as an "Angel Cradle Wrap" as shown by mine, above. The one above is very small and I would add the corner pocket, or cut it more like 12".

I used very thin batting in between or a little piece of flannel, instead of batting. Several of mine are quilted, the others simply have a heart shape quilted on to bind the pieces together. Add some ribbons at the tying points and rosettes or other simple trims and you have sweet little wraps for the tiniest of little angels.

For those who like to use or simply view patterns here are links to free patterns, photos and clothing links for preemies of all stages and sizes. Mine are intended for little ones weighing about 1 lb and about 6" long...a truly sad and yet endearing thought filled with compassion for the losses that so many of us endure.

TOP: A design of your own choosing, pieced or whole cloth.

    BACKING:Pre-washed 100% cotton flannel.

BATTING: Most neo-natal intensive care nurses prefer no batting, just the top and the backing layers.

BINDING: Flannel or soft cotton fabric. The easiest option is pillowcase style (with right sides together, sew around the perimeter leaving 5-6” unsewn for turning purposes. Turn, press and slip-stitch opening. OR with wrong sides together, turn backing to the front and topstitch. Traditional binding techniques usually accepted if you prefer.

QUILTING: Hand or machine quilting. Most hospital prefer no tying and they see the knots as being too hard on these babies’ tender skin. If quilts are simply on

top of isolettes, tying is usually fine.

FINISHED SIZE: Some programs prefer extremely small sizes...from 12"-18" for the tiniest babies or for bereavement quilts. Other prefer 22" x 22", or even 24” x 30” . With quilts placed on top of an isolette unit, as many hospitals do... 30" x 30" or 36" x36" is a nice standard size. Like all quilt size recommendations, there is great variance, so check with your local hospital or favorite charity for preferences.

LABELS: Depends upon the program you join, the hospital requirements, and your personal preference. Some like AZBlankets4Kids, require their own label, on the FRONT of the quilt.

Great fun with a modern twist! A summer wedding quilt, perhaps? Love the use of yellow which is showing up more and more, have you noticed?

Something about this one makes me thing of applies and teachers. Is it just the red...see the hearts as scallops? Very different!

Oh, yes, sooo sweet! I'm thinking valentine love and doilies combined in one quilt. Too pretty for sweet words!

Simple, classic, always just right. This one I'd put on every baby isolette in the preemie nursery in a heartbeat. I need to get sewing. Love this and it could be make up in a hurry..always good for when you need to be able to make a quilt in a day!

Another bit of a modern twist combined with the charm of traditional.  I can see this one in different colors...imagine  black and white and one other color for accent...oh yes!

Sochi: The Principle of the Patchwork Quilt

    Sochi

Two and a half years ago, I wrote a post about "The Principle of the Patchwork Quilt" on my primary blog at With Heart and Hands at a a time when the theme, the look, and samples first came out as a mere possibility for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi!

    http://www.with-heart-and-hands.com/2014/02/winter-olympics-principle-of-patchwork.html

Guess what? It's the theme that was selected!

Michele Bilyeu Timeline Recent Status Photo Place Life event Status Photo Place Life event What's on your mind? Michele Bilyeu shared a link. A few seconds ago Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics: The Principle of the Patchwork Quilt won! And don't you just love how the rainbow (and patchwork quilts) come out no matter how much one culture tries to rain on another culture's parade? Think good thought for all people, of all cultures and all beliefs, during the opening ceremonies tonight and throughout the Winter Olympics. See the Russian patchwork Olympic apparel etc. at:

The beautiful rainbow...a symbol for all people, of all religions, cultures, and  belief systems is especially meaningful during a time when a hosting country has chosen to denigrate an entire group of people, that the same country picked a theme celebrating the patchwork of diversity of cultures.

Here's a look at some of the clothing that the Russian athletes will be wearing.  I made a general collage to share the overall look of some of the Olympic Russian apparel.

    http://www.with-heart-and-hands.com/2014/02/winter-olympics-principle-of-patchwork.html

And I, for one, would love to own a piece of this as winter wear! I'm thinking the blue patchwork vest on the right near the bottom in my own collage their Olympic team clothing....oh yes, I could wear this!

As Bosco, the official licensing organization says:

"Olympic patchwork quilt, developed by Bosco’s creative department and given to the Sochi 2014 Organising Committee, will be the official Look of Russia’s first Winter Games.

Our goal was to represent a diverse range of emotions and feelings, connecting concepts like Motherland, Family, Culture, Time, Olympism, Peace, Nobility, Friends, Memory, Honour, Dreams, Beauty, Freedom, Pride, Warmth, Happiness, Greatness, Reliability, Victory, Creativity, Hospitality, Creation, Future, Russia, Planet Earth.     Every region in the world is proud of its unique origins, and it is no different in Russia. That is why there are so many different local traditions, songs and crafts that highlight the individuality of their creators, each valuable in its own right. Bosco had a wealth of choices to represent Russia’s rich diversity, but in the end we settled on something familiar, warm and welcoming: the patchwork quilt.

In the concept design, every patch was infused with the history and personality of traditional crafts from each of Russia’s 89 regions: in a single tapestry we combined Uftyuzhskaya painting and Vologda lace, Gzhel and Zhostovo painting, Kubachi patterns and the flowers of Pavlo Posad shawls, Mezenskaya painting and Khokhloma, Yakutsk patterns, fabrics of Ivanovo and other distinctive Russian patterns.

That is how we arrived at a modern, distinctive and unmistakeably Russian Look of the Games.

2014 Winter Olympics--Principle of the Patchwork Quilt?

    Sochi

I am quoting from the official 2011 press releases from Bosco, the official licensed clothing company for the Russian Olympic Team apparel.

"The XXII Olympic Winter Games will take place in 2014 in Sochi, Russia. This week the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee unveiled the concept of the "Look of the Games" which was designed by BOSCO Sports, a sponsor of the Olympics, as well as the official uniform provider for the Russian Olympic team since 2002.

Their newest entry for 'the look' revolves around “the principle of the ‘patchwork quilt’ — a combination of 16 designs representing the most famous traditional Russian arts and crafts, ranging from Gzhel to Khokhloma.”
    Using these compiled fabrics....

    Sochi
.....they created a design which the press release describes as....

"The design was created from the motifs of ornaments of the most famous Russian national crafts. Here we can see Uftyuzhskaya painting and Vologda lace, Gzhel and Zhostovo painting, Kubachi patterns and Pavlov Posad shawls, Mezenskaya painting and Khokhloma, Yakutsk patterns and Ivanovo chintz. A new modern approach to the folk motifs, a thorough work on the common algorithm for construction of the patchwork quilt - “an individual net”, and on each of the 28 constituent fragments, and an unconditional work of authorship of the BOSCO creative team add an exclusive urgency to the LOOK OF THE GAMES."

Check out the fabulous unveiling photos...

In my 2011 post, I wrote "Oh yes....If I could vote I'd definitely vote for this patchwork crafts entry as the theme of the 2014 Olympics, how about you?"

Let us hope and prayer that things will improve in time for the 2014 Winter Olympics in all ways and keep the country and all of the athletes in your positive thoughts in all ways!

Today, the official opening day for the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, I am off making a patchwork quilt...it's all about "The Principle of the Patchwork Quilt"! Mine won't be like their ideas, just a patchwork quilt of my own.

But here are some ideas and links for you as I am receiving many requests for "How to Make a Sochi Quilt".

All of these Sochi designs for "The Principle of the Patchwork Quilt"  resemble both the Thousand Pyramids and many of the Diamond quilts.

Yellow Clover Vintage Quilt Block: Instructions

    Vintage Pattern Directions..no longer available

**Yellow Clover a block design first published by Nancy Cabot for the Chicago Tribune.

    Yellow Clover:
    BLOCK SIZE:10 1/2" square

    MATERIALS

    • Dark print at        least 5" x 10"

    • Medium print at        least 10" square

    • Light print at        least 16" square or one fat quarter

    CUTTING

Dimensions      include a 1/4" seam allowance

    • Cut 2: 5" squares,        dark print

    • Cut 3: 5" squares,        medium print

    • Cut 5: 5" squares,        light print

    • Cut 4: 3 3/8"        squares, light print, then cut them in quarters diagonally to yield 16        side triangles

    • Cut 7: 2" squares,        light, then cut 2 of them in half diagonally to yield 4 corner triangles

    DIRECTIONS

    • Place a marked square on a 5" dark print              square, right sides together. Sew 1/4" away from the diagonal lines              on both sides. Make 2 using the dark squares and 3 using the medium              ones.

And now of course, we have disappearing 4 patches, 9 patches (shown above) and on and on with so many fun and varied improvisations.

Stitchery Dickory Dock: Scrappy Disappearing 9-Patch Tutorial

Disappearing Nine Patch Tutorial from Jo's Country Junction

    From Kristy Daum:
A fairly simple block , modernized by balance and choice of fabrics.
    1. Instead of using 9 printed fabrics in a single block, you use only 4; the balance is your background fabric.
    2. You use multiple Block Layouts in a single quilt.

Below is an illustration showing you a handful of Block Layout options using the 4 + 5 concept.  There are certainly more then I have shown here and I encourage you to create your own too.  The greater variety of Block Layouts you use in a single quilt, the more unique it will look.

Here are the Block Layouts that I choose to use in my quilt.  As I wanted to make 9 blocks, I just duplicated some of my favorites.
Below in an illustration showing you how the blocks will look once quartered, see the variety.

Once you have sewn together, then quartered all of your blocks, you can begin laying out the assorted pieces into a pleasing arrangement.  This is the fun part, as you can really play with the negative space.
All that's left to do is sew the blocks into rows, and then sew the rows together, sandwich, quilt and bind.  Ta-Da!! you have just created your very own Modernized D9P.

Whether you make an Easter quilt, or Easter basket pillowcases...here's a fun list of Easter pattern links..not just for quilts, and quilt blocks but a few super cute Easter crafts, too!

And best of all, the sweet little one who received it,

The Jewish celebration of Passover, The Feast of the Unleavened Bread was practiced by ancient Israelites at the beginning of their New Year, the Spring Equinox.  So, I am also including those free patterns, tutorials and links that I have for this blessed holiday, as well.  Some are also used for Channukkah, so forgive the cross links and enjoy those, later or make ahead, now!

And of course, if you celebrate Spring in any form, most of these works for Spring and the beginning of new life in the changing season of the light.
